Constitutional Silver Coins

Constitutional silver, also known as junk silver, is an casual term used in the United States by coin collectors and silver stackers for any silver coin that is in fair condition and has no real numismatic (collectible) value above the silver bullion value of the silver it contains. Such coins are popular with people seeking to invest in physical silver. The word “junk” refers only to the value of the coins as collectibles and not to the actual condition of the coins; junk silver is not scrap silver.

Precious metals, like silver, are measured in troy ounces (ozt). A spot price for silver is the price for a troy ounce of silver which is 99.9-percent pure, or 999 fine. Silver coins, including junk-silver coins, have set silver-alloy contents ranging from 35-percent to 90-percent or more. The term “coin silver,” for example, refers to 90-percent silver alloy which was the most common alloy used in pre-1965 mint silver U.S. coins.

Any combination of 90-percent silver U.S. coins which have a face value of US $1.00 contains 0.715 ozt (22.2 g) of 99.9-percent silver (0.7234 ozt if uncirculated), except for the silver dollars (Morgan and Peace) which contain 0.7736 troy ounces (24.06 g) troy ounces of silver. In other words, 1 ozt (31 g) of 99.9-percent silver is contained in any combination of 90-percent silver U.S. coins will have a face value of US $1.40. $1.40 of pre-1965 junk silver equals 1 ozt silver.

Peace Dollars

Peace dollar available at your local coin shop

The Peace dollar is a United States silver dollar coin minted for circulation from 1921 to 1928 and in 1934 and 1935, and beginning again in 2021. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the coin was the result of a competition to find designs representative of peace. Its obverse (the side of a coin or currency note bearing the front) represents the head and neck of the Goddess of Liberty in profile, and the reverse depicts a bald eagle at rest clutching an olive branch, with the legend “Peace”. It was the last United States dollar coin to be struck for circulation in silver.

With the passing of the Pittman Act in 1918, the United States Mint was required to strike millions of silver dollars, and began to do so in 1921, using the Morgan dollar design. Numismatists (coin collectors) began to lobby the Mint to issue a coin that memorialized the peace following World War I; although they failed to get Congress to pass a bill requiring the redesign, they were able to persuade government officials to take action. The Peace dollar was approved by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon in December 1921, completing the redesign of United States coinage that had begun in 1907.

The general population accepted the declared plan, which incorporated a wrecked blade, was illustrative of rout, and the Mint quickly acted to eliminate the sword. The Peace dollar was first struck on December 28, 1921; a little more than 1,000,000 were instituted bearing a 1921 date. At the point when the Pittman Act prerequisites were met in 1928, the mint stopped creation of the coins, however more were struck during 1934 and 1935 because of additional regulation. In 1965, in the midst of much discussion, the Denver mint struck more than 316,000 Peace dollars dated 1964, yet these were rarely given, and all are accepted to have been dissolved. The mint started creation of the Peace Dollar again in 2021.
